A really Pukka Christmas
Giving is important to us at Pukka (see our article on giving) and this year, rather than sending Christmas cards, we’re supporting three local charities that give to People, Plants and Planet.
Our Pukka team have donated food, household items and gifts to the Withywood Centre to help neighbours in crisis, maybe as a result of redundancy, illness, debt or paying for the additional costs of heating during winter. As well as emergency aid, the centre also provides practical support to users to enable them to enjoy a healthy, happy life without dependency.
At Pukka we believe diet is one of the most important factors in health and we believe everyone should have access to healthy, affordable and sustainable food. However, in the UK, research suggests that around 7 in 10 people consume more salt than is recommended (we suggest using herbs instead – check out our recipes) and most of us eat less than the recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. So Pukka is donating £1,950 to Hartcliffe Health and Environment Group to support their community cooking courses which benefit users of the Withywood Centre, including young single mothers, isolated and disabled people and those with a diet-related condition.
To encourage eating more fruit, we also think we need more fruit trees! We love trees at Pukka, not only because they provide fruits for our creations (like Pukka Organic Wellbeing Triphala Plus), but because they improve our health by removing pollutants. There is a compelling case for improving tree cover and so we’re also donating £1,150 to the Forest of Avon Trust to support their Garden Forest initiative to plant fruit trees in gardens and community allotments, including the community orchard in our own neighbourhood.
Looking ahead to the new year, we are carrying on with our work with Bristol Green Capital 2015 to make our city healthier and happier, and also promoting the NHS self-care strategy to help people live healthier lives through diet and healthy eating.

Thanks to all of you for your support in 2014 - here's to a healthy and happy new year!
